You are responsible for ensuring your content does not violate any laws or third-party rights.
6. Receipt Scanning Services
Splitorium offers receipt scanning functionality to help you quickly add expenses. By using this feature, you agree to the following:
- Processing: When you scan a receipt, the image is sent to our servers and processed using optical character recognition (OCR) technology to extract expense information such as merchant name, amount, date, and line items.
- Temporary Processing: During the scanning process, your receipt image is processed in real-time and is not retained after the extracted data is returned to you.
- Receipt Attachments: If you choose to attach a receipt to an expense, the image is stored on our secure servers (Amazon S3) and remains associated with that expense.
- Retention: Attached receipt images are retained only for as long as the associated expense exists. When an expense is deleted, the attached receipt image is automatically removed from our servers.
- User Control: You may remove a receipt attachment from any expense at any time. Once removed, the receipt image is permanently deleted from our servers.
- Content Responsibility: You are responsible for ensuring that any receipts you scan or upload do not contain sensitive personal information beyond what is necessary for expense tracking.
7. Expense Calculation and Rounding
When splitting expenses among participants, Splitorium performs mathematical calculations to determine each participant's share. Due to the nature of currency rounding, you acknowledge and agree to the following:
- Rounding to Cents: All expense shares are rounded to the nearest cent (two decimal places) as required by standard currency formats.
- Indivisible Amounts: Some expense amounts cannot be divided evenly among all participants. For example, an expense of $10.00 split among 3 people results in $3.33 per person, with a remainder of $0.01.
- Fair Distribution of Remainders: When rounding creates a discrepancy between the sum of individual shares and the total expense amount, Splitorium distributes the difference as fairly as possible by assigning additional cents (typically $0.01) to individual participants one at a time, starting with those who have larger shares.
- Maximum Adjustment: Any individual participant's share may be adjusted by up to $0.10 (10 cents) to ensure the sum of all shares exactly equals the expense total. This adjustment is typically much smaller (1-2 cents per participant).
- Itemized Splitting: For itemized expenses (such as scanned receipts with line items), each line item is split among its assigned participants, and tax and tip are distributed proportionally based on each participant's share of the subtotal. Rounding is applied at each step.
- No Guarantee of Equal Shares: While we strive for fairness, mathematically perfect equal splits are not always possible. You accept that minor cent-level variations may occur in split amounts.
These rounding rules ensure that every expense balances correctly while distributing any rounding adjustments as equitably as possible among participants.
